- Director Barbara Joyce
Barbara danced as
a child in her native country, Ireland, until the age of eighteen. After
she was married, she and her husband and two children moved to the U.S.A.
to Kingston, New York. There, she joined an adult group of dancers and continued
to dance. She then began to teach set dancing and ceili dancing. These styles
of dancing are mostly for adults, but you will now find young adults and
teen-agers enjoying them, too. In 1996, Barbara
moved to Atlanta and started teaching Irish Dancing just for fun until she
realized there was a great demand for it. She then joined the Drake School
of Irish Dance in Atlanta and assisted in teaching for eight years. Barbara
now teaches in Carrollton, Douglasville, Newnan, LaGrange and Rome, Georgia.
She teaches her students all three styles of Irish Dance, which is very
rare: step dancing, set dancing, and ceili dancing.
Barbara is well
known for her patient, kind, and nurturing style of teaching. Many of the
student's parents have told her she has the "patience of a Saint". She has
even taught two hearing-impaired to dance and become competitive dancers.
Both of these girls competed and won at major competitions. The judges were
amazed at their skill and at how Barbara could teach children who could
not hear the music.
